Japanese Language Guide & Audio - World Nomads App Reviews

Not too shabby

Aside from a few typos this is a FREE app that would be worth $1.99 in my opinion~ I like the kanji which so many PAID apps leave out.. Its pretty fun and easy to use :)

Ok, but kind of inaccurate

Great for using on the go for pronunciation and useful phrases, but for the more serious Nihongo enthusiast, the kanji/hiragana dont always match the Roomaji phrases.

Okay, but...

There are a lot of problems. First, I would like to say that the audio is actually quite good. It may be a bit slow, but if youre learning, then thats probably good. However, what is being said is part of the problem. Quite a few phrases are, while not necessarily inaccurate, not what anyone would actually say. For example, drug should really be "mayaku" rather than "doraggu". And boat should be "fune", not "boto". Also, what the anglicized version and what the Japanese said were frequently different. It wasnt consistant, either. Sometimes the anglicized version was more accurate, and sometimes the Japanese was more accurate. Finally, it wasnt enen anglicized correctly. Instead of "r", it had "l". I think there may have been other problems, but at the moment I dont recall them. In conclusion, its an okay start, but there are a lot of things that need to be fixed- perhaps have someone who is fluent in both English and Japanese look over it.

Great app

Intuitive to use. Clear pronunciation. Cant wait to get the commercial version. Needs more basic vocabularies and phrases.

Great format!

This app is amazing! I just moved to Japan without any language training and this has been great for learning a few polite greetings but falls short in other categories. I downloaded a few other languages and was surprised at how thorough Spanish was. Id be willing to pay for the app if it had more audio clips.

Sloppy

In several cases the Japanese hiragana do not correspond to the Roman transliteration. Someone was very sloppy.

Romanized Version Doesnt Match

This app might provide some useful words and phrases, but the romanized version of the phrases often dont seem to match the Japanese character (hiragana) version. For example, the romanized version for one phrase is: "Watashi Wa", while the hiragana actually says (in Japanese): "Watashi no Namae wa". Differences like this make no sense at all. Its almost as if the people who put the app together dont really know Japanese...
